Rasta Paddling For The Whales

by The Editors on September 29, 2009

TransparentseaDon’t try and say that Dave “Rasta” Rastovich isn’t doing anything for the environment. On Thursday, October 1, 2009 the recent recipient of the 2009 SIMA Environmentalist of the Year Award is heading off on a 700k ocean paddle from Byron Bay to Sydney to “raise awareness of whaling in the Southern Ocean,” according to a story in The Australian.

He will embark on his ambitious Transparentsea journey on Thursday, tracking the annual migration south of humpback whales over a gruelling 36 days. . . Rastovich, 29, an environmental activist and surfing champion out of Brunswick Heads, aims to paddle the entire distance in his single-seat kayak. . . If all goes to plan, he will hit Bondi Beach on November 5. . . “What excites me the most is being able to combine the high-risk elements of surfing and sailing and the notion of endurance and pushing your body,” Rastovich says. . . “I’m eager to bring those elements together with environmental awareness initiatives.”

Well, at least he’s not pushing a longboard skateboard through the outback.

The Todd Richards Parkour Show?

by The Editors on September 29, 2009

UplogoApparently, when Todd Richards isn’t out trying to learn new tricks, he’s out promoting the “extremely fascinating sport of Parkour.” Yes, the same “sport” clowned in the opening segment of this fall’s The Office premiere.

The World Freerunning & Parkour Federation website reports that TR will be hosting a special MTV show on October 22, 2009 titled Ultimate Parkour Challenge.

If you loved the opening chase in CASINO ROYALE, then this show, hosted by Todd Richards, will blow your mind. . . Born in the suburbs of Paris, Parkour/Freerunning turns an urban jungle into an action-packed playground. Moving quickly, efficiently or just plain creatively, Freerunners re-imagine the world as they cruise over, under, around and through whatever is in their way. . . Join 8 of the WFPF Founding Athletes as they live up to their motto, “Know Obstacles. Know Freedom”!

Apparently, the show was originally scheduled to air in April, but got pushed off until October. Oddly, members of the hardcore Parkour community are not happy about the show nor the organization promoting it. Which is kind of funny in itself.

For his part Todd says the show is basically, “Me talking about ninjas getting paid.” And as we all know, Todd has been a ninja supporter since way back in the day.

Liftopia Adds Major Resorts To Discounting

by The Editors on September 28, 2009

16072V1-Max-150X150The bargain lift-ticket seller Liftopia.com has added Whistler/Blackcomb, Killington, Mammoth Mountain, Winter Park, Copper Mountain, and Stowe, to its list of discounter resorts this season, and rounded up $1 million more in funding, according to a story on TechCrunch.

Liftopia allows ski resorts to offer variable pricing for tickets based on much how traffic they anticipate seeing on the slopes — in other words, resorts can lower their prices if they think they’re going to have a slow day the same way an airline does if a flight might not fill up. Some resorts have been able to do this to a limited extent with ‘peak season’ tickets (a ticket for Christmas time would cost more than one a month or two later), but up until now they haven’t had a good way to adjust their pricing on a daily basis. Liftopia gives them this option.

Definitely something worth checking out this season. . .
