Do people actually attend an alaia shaping class? At the Patagonia store in Cardiff, California, they do, according to @patagoniacardif.
Jon Wegener’s free alaia shapping classes under way on our patio. Cyrus Sutton here too with new alaia film. 3 more classes to go!
Apparently there’s a little more to it than a Skil saw and some scrap wood. Who would have known?

“The next thing I know, I realize, okay there’s a large animal next to me,” he said. “I was right next to it for a second, basically touching it. And when it submerged, it pulled me down on top of it.”
The 8-foot tiger shark too a big chunk of the nose of his board when he left.

The US Army is reportedly bringing us live coverage of what’s left of the Oregon Trifecta starting today on Go211.com. Just think: the money being spent to convince skateboarders to help protect our freedom is our tax dollars at work. So really, we’re paying for all of this. Nice.

Super model Erin Wasson is planning a large show in Bryant Park during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. On September 11, 2009 she’ll be showing off her new RVCA line for 1,110 guests at 8 PM, according to a post on Fashion Week Dispatch.
Wasson will be utilizing the enormous space to its full potential. She’s planning a multi-media installation and a secret live band performance to highlight RCVA’s Spring effort. “It’s really a thrill, to be able to take a venue everyone in the fashion industry knows so well, and bring in new personalities and a new vibe that spin the experience in a different direction,” added Wasson. “I mean, it’s almost too predictable to do something ‘cool’ in, like, an abandoned warehouse. Cool can happen anywhere. It’s a state of mind. That’s the essence of the Erin Wasson x RVCA brand, and there’s no reason not to follow that logic onto the runway.”
That’s pretty prime time for such a “small” company.

When Nissan Canada decided to give away 50 new Nissan Cubes their advertising agency Capital C thought it would be cool to have a “social media” contest and use snowboarder Leanne Pelosi as one of their three English language judges.
Contestents were to use social media to show of their “creative skills” and then a panel of judges would select 50 winners who would drive away in a brand new car. After the winners of the cars were announced on June 23, 2009 a website EncyclopediaDramatica noticed that of all the entries across Canada, three of Leanne’s friends happened to win new cars, according to a story in Marketing Magazine.
Judge Leanne Pelosi in particular has connections to at least three winners, one of whom, Jeff Keenan, was alleged by Encyclopedia Dramatica to be her boyfriend. . . While Nissan claims the two do not even reside in the same province, there is a significant, easily verifiable connection between judge and contestant. Pelosi once headed up snowboard video production company Runway Films, which listed Keenan as its primary contact. Pelosi also appeared in snowboard videos directed by Keenan.
The other two winners who Leanne knows were Robin Van Gyn, and skier Anthony Bornonowski. Then again, Leanne knows a lot of really talented people. . .

Right wing California Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has reportedly invited Barney Frank and his partner Jim Ready, to come surfing in Huntington Beach, according to Politico.com.
Rohrabacher said he broached the idea with Frank at a function not long ago, after Ready had told him of their shared interest in hanging ten. The congressman heads the three-person Congressional Surfing Caucus, which includes fellow California Republicans Brian Bilbray and Duncan Hunter. . . Frank’s office confirms that the Massachusetts Democrat and his partner have accepted Rohrabacher’s invitation, but nobody will say much more than that.
Nice idea, Dana. Huntington Beach could use a few more. . . happy surfers.

While we hate to think that analysts have this much power over stock prices, Caris & Company analyst Dorothy Lakner reportedly gave Zumiez a 17 percent bump this morning when she said she liked what she was seeing at the mall retailer, according to a story on CNBC.com.
Caris analyst Dorothy Lakner said Zumiez said it would offer back-to-school deals, and “its efforts seem to be bearing some fruit.” Lakner said things look “less bad” ahead of the back-to-school season and that there were signs of improvement at stores in the western U.S.
Lakner didn’t let Zumiez 17 percent July same store sales drop ruffle here at all. Too bad they’re not always saying nice things.
