Globe International Limited has released financials for the 08-09 fiscal year, and while sales in the US were down 20 percent and the company lost A$8.9 million, they are optimistic moving forward, according to a story on Sports One Source.
Globe International Limited Chief Executive Officer Matt Hill said “At the announcement of the company’s first half results in February this year, we outlined the operational restructuring and cost rationalisation plans that were being implemented. It is therefore pleasing to have seen the positive impact of these initiatives in the second half of the year despite difficult trading conditions.” . . . “It is difficult to predict when a recovery will take effect, and as a result we maintain conservative expectations of trading conditions as we enter the 2010 financial year. Now though, as a business we are in a better position to deal with these trading conditions due to the changes that have been implemented over the past twelve months.”
As Mad Men’s Duck Philips said last season, “When the economy is down, people don’t buy things.”

Shop-eat-surf.com’s Tiffany Montgomery is reporting that DC Shoes cut 10 percent of their employees today. And we believe her.
The spokesman said about 10 percent of the workforce was cut previously at Quiksilver and Roxy, and the DC reductions are of similar size on a percentage basis. . . DC has been Quiksilver’s best-performing brand and its major growth vehicle. A new financing deal with the private equity firm Rhone allowed Quiksilver to keep the brand rather than sell it to pay off debt.
We knew with two people placed firmly on the Quik board of directors that Rhone would handle their business.

On Tuesday morning Snowmass, Colorado skaters found a heavy local dominating the bowls in their skatepark. It was a bear, according to a story on 9news.com. The animal kind.
Authorities say it looks as if the bear had been in the park all night when they found it Tuesday morning. . . The solution to get the bear out was to give it a way to climb out. . . So, authorities with the Snowmass Parks and Rec Department put a long ladder down into the skateboard bowl and the bear eventually climbed up and got out.

Shaun White linked up his back-to-back double corks again to win the first LG Snowboard FIS World Cup Halfpipe of the season at Cardrona, New Zealand, according to a story on Funsporting.com.
Shaun put down a straight air, backside 900, frontside 720, cab double cork 1080, to a front 1080 in his first run, and a straight air, backside 500, frontside 720, cab double cork 1080, front double cork 1080 on his second run.
Although there were several riders like Nathan Johnstone (AUS) or US-riders Danny Davis and Scotty Lago who did try the Double Corks, it was White who was the only one sticking them into the snow in the finals, in his second run even as back-to-backs. But no one should think that this would be the end of the story as White adds: “For sure I have something in store. I’m always trying to stay ahead of the rest. I have more tricks which I might reveal at the national qualifiers for the Olympics.”
On the women’s side Neither Olympic gold medalist Kelly Clark, nor silver medalist Gretchen Bleiler could stop World Cup Halfpipe Champion Jiayu Liu, 16, of China as she won her sixth FIS World Cup snowboard event with back to back 720s.

Smile On Your Brother is a traveling art show and auction (the first contributor project) “conceived by Mike Giles and Annie Lam and co-curated by Bob Kronbauer of www.clubmumble.com fame.” The show is raising money to provide 100 skateboards to disadvantaged youth across Canada.
The auction, which began yesterday and continues until October 20, 2009, features what organizers are calling “the original shape of skateboards when they first hit the market” featuring art by skateboarding artist and “those affected by the skateboarding industry.”
Participating artists include: Thomas Campbell, Randy Laybourne, Dave Carnie, Don Pendleton, Chris Pastras, Andy Jenkins, Andrew Pommier, Bob Kronbauer and more (click here for the full list).
The art show will hit six shops in Canada (starting at Live Stock Vancouver Aug. 24-26, 2009).

When the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Center was announced a while ago we didn’t really put two and two together. We thought it was just another dry slope, only this time stateside in Lynchberg, Virginia. But when a friend mentioned that this new park was at Liberty University, the school founded by the Moral Majority’s Jerry Falwell it seemed even stranger.
According to a story on Inside Higher Ed, Jerry Falwell, Jr. built the 11-acre park to attract college students to Liberty U.
Adding a ski slope to Liberty is a move straight out of the Falwell playbook, according to Kevin Roose, a Brown University student who went “undercover” at Liberty to a write an expose on the university. . . .Jerry Falwell belonged to the ‘By any means necessary’ school of evangelism. He gave away cars to the first people who registered; he had a video game contest. I think if he could have gotten away with it, he would have given [new students] pieces of Noah’s Ark.”.
Grand opening festivities for the slope are August 29, 2009. The “mountain” is open from 5 to 10 PM daily and costs $7 a hour, $4 if you’re a student.
