Bam Directs Dead Girls Are Easy

by The Editors on July 16, 2009

69 Vid1Bam Margera’s new video for the Finnish band The 69 Eyes and titled Dead Girls Are Easy will officially premiere on Playboy.com at 8 AM PST on Friday, July 17, 2009, according to a post on Blabbermouth.net.

Aimed at those sleazy online chicks with the looks that kill, “Dead Girls Are Easy” is a tongue-in-cheek power anthem that just begged for a video to complement it. The clip follows a coven of tight black leather-clad vampire vixens luring and converting the men with whom they come into contact. “It’s almost like vampires are taking over the world,” muses singer Jyrki 69.

Sounds like something that will go perfectly with our Friday morning bowl of Cheerios.

Cowabunga: Jamie Thomas’ Leap Of Inisght

by The Editors on July 15, 2009

Blackbox InsightRumors have been running since last month that new Black Box Distribution CEO/Partner Frank Messman would find a way to “grow the business” at Jamie Thomas’ warehouse but some are finding it a mystery that they have fallen off the street and become slaves to surf fashion with zero hesitation. That appears to be the case according to a Tiffany Montgomery story on Shop-eat-surf.com.

Carlsbad-based Black Box will be responsible for the sales and distribution of Insight in the U.S. – essentially backend operations. The Insight USA team will remain in charge of marketing and product and keep their offices in Los Angeles. The Insight sales management team will also work in Los Angeles. . . Black Box owner and President Jamie Thomas said he has admired Insight for awhile and described it as “the coolest apparel brand out there.” . . . “I appreciated the originality and rawness of the brand,” Jamie said. “I personally found it inspiring.”

Fear not men of North County, your women are safe for the time being. Insight USA President Jesse Faen will reportedly be staying in Los Angeles.

The WhoIsJOB Tweeter Comes Out

by The Editors on July 15, 2009

Chas SmithOne of our favorite Tweeters in the past few months has been @whoisJOB. For a while we mistakenly thought it might have been some ploy by Postsurf.com’s Lewis Samuels to keep things even more interested for him on the North Shore, but today we find out that it is acutally LikeBitchin.com’s Charlie Smith.

In a post titled “I Tweet Jamie” Smith writes:

Twitter is terribly retarded, unless you are famous. Then it is fun. Jamie O’Brien is just famous enough for fun and I have spent the last few months writing his tweets. It started slow. He was in Bali so I said things such as, “I am looking for a restaurant that serves breastmilk.” People responded less than favorably. “You are a sik fuk!” It built throughout my tenure. A month ago I wrote, “Bagels are donuts for fags” and felt very pleased with myself. People responded less than favorably. “Stop hatin!”

We kind of hope he keeps going. Don’t know what they will mean for Jamie O’Brien, but we’re guessing he can probably take care of himself.

The Shark Attack Wetsuit

by The Editors on July 15, 2009

Bydiddoxl

Nothing clears the line faster than a shredded wetsuit and blood, and maybe that’s one of the benefits designer/artist diddo is going for with at least one of these new wetsuit designs.

The first edition contains four original designs: a rusted iron diving suit evoking the days of Jules Verne, the anatomic musculature suit as a homage to our inner strength, a wet suit which gives the illusion that the wearer has been attacked by a group of hungry sharks and finally a whale shark patterned suit that celebrates the brilliance and originality of our natural water world.

Think we’ll just stick the the rusted iron diving suit. Then the outside of the suit can reflect the insides our knees.

Magazine Ad Pages Still Slumping

by The Editors on July 15, 2009

Img 1963It’s a good thing we never seem to tire of beating the dead pony named print, because the news from the world of magazine advertising (not surprisingly) just keeps getting worse in Q2 2009, according to a story on Media Buyer Planner.

All categories tracked by the Publishers Information Bureau were down by double digits, with automotive, financial, insurance and real estate being hit the hardest, writes Media Life. Automotive fell 47.8%, while financial was down 48.8%. Toiletries and cosmetics performed the best, down 14.1%. . . Total rate-card reported spending for the second quarter was down 22%, while total spending for the first half was down 21.1%.

But how are things going in the land of action sports magazines? Well, as we say nearly every quarter, the only mags from our world that get tracked by the Magazine Publishers of America are those produced by Bonnier Corporation’s Transworld Media. And while it could be argued that it’s not fair to only pick on them, we don’t have the time (nor the magazines) to count up the ad pages in all the action magazines. So here’s how it looked for Transworld Media vs. Q2 2008 based on total ad revenue and advertising pages.

                         $2009 $2008 %change Pages 09 Pages 08 %change
Transworld Snowboarding 1,069,312 1,897,419 -43.6 52.84 98.33 -46.3
Transworld Skateboarding 7,358,215 9,149,705 -19.6 334.67 433.20 -22.7
Transworld Surf 2,536,506 3,710,912 -31.6 230.67 353.00 -34.7
TransWorld Motocross 3,111,709 4,004,212 -22.3 248.71 336.01 -26.0
RIDE BMX 1,256,788 1,231,590 2.0 127.33 131.02 -2.8
Quad Off Rad Mag 1,174,915 1,739,876 -32.5 123.19 189.96 -35.1

That’s a drop of 424 pages of advertising in three months and while we don’t really think the revenue amounts are accurate (they’re based on full rate card pricing), it does represent a ($5,226,269) pretty large percentage drop.

Good thing Bonnier’s foodie magazine Saveur is continuing to break records.

The Grapes Of Rad

by The Editors on July 15, 2009

Img 1425.JpgThe National Steinbeck Center, a sometimes functioning, strangely modern looking museum plopped right in the middle of the lettuce fields of Salinas, California celebrates the life of California writer John Steinbeck and that’s why we find it odd, that they are looking for “skateboard art” for an art show they are curating called “What the Deck.”

The National Steinbeck Center is seeking artists for an exhibition and fundraiser that will have the artists showcase their work on a skateboard deck in the “What the Deck?” art show. The works of about 50 artists will be exhibited in the center’s rotunda. Live skateboarding and exhibit sponsors are needed, with proceeds to benefit the National Steinbeck Center and Dorothy’s Place soup kitchen in Salinas.

Nothing says skateboarding like the Joad family. . .
