The only thing better than a profile in a local newspaper, is a profile in a magazine that goes in most local newspapers in the world. . . like Shaun White’s profile in this weekend’s Parade Magazine. It features top secret insights into the extreme life for newspaper readers in the heartland.
White can hop on a snowboard, zoom down a steep hill, shoot off a ski jump, and simultaneously flip and spin while in midair—thus executing what is known in the swaggering parlance of his sport as a “backside rodeo 540.” That’s three 180s. Put him on a skateboard and he’s apt to perform similarly dizzying stunts in a vertigo-inducing half-pipe made of concrete or wood, showing reckless disregard for the integrity of his bone structure.
Dizzying, indeed.

There is a completely different world of skateboarding out there. And it’s called slalom. The New York Times checks in with some “graying skateboarders” during the Seismic United States Nationals last weekend in Lafayette, Colorado.
In a sport that celebrates youth, slalom skateboarders are more likely to be middle-aged; there are about 500 active practitioners in the United States. With virtually no news media coverage for slalom’s roughly 75 races each year, it is one of the most obscure disciplines in skateboarding.
And even though Camp Woodward is running slalom camps, we’re guessing it’s going to stay that way.

To help raise money for the The Tony Hawk Foundation Tony has decided to sell off his personal time to anyone willing to pay through the nose. It’s called the Tony Hawk Experience. Here’s what a $75,000 donation will get you (and three of your friends):
I (Tony) will pick you up at LAX in my 620hp Jeep SRT and we will visit cliché tourist spots (Hollywood sign, Sunset Blvd, Venice Beach, etc) with Tom Green on our way to the X Games. You will then have VIP passes to see any and all X Games events or just sit in the booth with me while I commentate the skating competition(s). Dinner with Tom Green and Shaun White at Sushi Nozawa, Matsuhisa or try some blowfish at The Hump… or we can get the true LA Paparazzi experience at Koi. This package also includes four signed complete Tony Hawk model skateboards. . . NOTE: must take place between July 30 – Aug 2.
It would kind of be fun to put together a group of the world’s most annoying kids and then buy them one of the $100,000 packages just to see it all on video. Because, it’s for a good cause.

In anyone else’s hands the Drive Thru Series from Poor Specimen would likely have broken down on the side of the surf film highway years ago. But with Greg Browning at the wheel and Donovan Frankenreiter and Benji Weatherly’s as co-pilots it seems that they just keep getting better and better. This is especially true with Drive Thru Australia, which had its world premiere last night (July 16, 2009) at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California.
The crowds began showing up at six o’clock and by the time the doors opened for the second of two sold out shows their was a mob out front. And this wasn’t a free surf film showing. It was full pop $8 night at the movies price. While Wired Magazine Editor Chris Anderson may think that digital content is headed for free, the Drive Thru series proves that surfers are not only willing to pay for quality content, but are quite happy doing it. “These are the best surfers in the world,” said one man standing in line for the 9 PM showing. “Of course I’m going to pay to see them.”
The other thing that didn’t seem to bother anyone was that this was Donovan Frankenreiter, Benji Weatherly and Greg Browning’s (pictured right with Pat O’Connell) second drive through Australia. Five years ago (an eternity to groms in the audience) they made a similar trip with Rob Machado, Kalani Robb, and Dean Morrison. This time Pat O’Connell, Shane Dorian, Mark Occhilupo, and Andy Irons joined in.
Follow the jump for more. . .

Zumiez has settled a class action lawsuit with some California employees regarding overtime pay and food breaks to the tune of $1.3 million, according to story in the Puget Sound Business Journal.
Zumiez said a former employee alleged that the company didn’t pay all overtime owed to the worker, didn’t provide meal breaks as provided by California law, didn’t provide employees with proper itemized pay stubs, and didn’t pay fired employees their waiting time penalties as required by California law. . . The class-action suit covers Zumiez employees, except store managers, who worked in California from March 5, 2004 to Sept. 13, 2009.
If you worked at a California Zumiez during that time, better check in to see if you can finally get paid.

The Surfrider Foundation has teamed up with Legoland California in Carlsbad, California for the Celebrity Mosaic Project. A group of celebrities including musician Tom DeLonge, Tony Hawk, Al Pacino, Brooke Shields, Heidi Klum, Jamie Lee Curtis, Peter Facinielli, and Thomas Gibson have built their own ocean-themed Lego mosaics that will be on display in the theme park and available for auction on Charitybuzz.com. All the proceeds will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation.
“We are excited to be celebrating SEA LIFE Aquarium’s first birthday and partnering with them for the Celebrity Mosaic Project,” says Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “Their idea to use unique celebrity mosaics as a creative way to educate the public about our fragile ocean and marine environments is fantastic and aligns perfectly with our mission.”
We always figured Matt McClain for a closet Lego blockhead but we are impressed that he rolled it into his work so seamlessly. [click to continue…]
