Chris Cole On Winning $100,000

by The Editors on July 21, 2009

071209M -94At The 2009 Maloof Money Cup Chris Cole went home with the most biggest check on skateboarding’s biggest check weekend ever. Rob Brink interviewed him afterwards to find out how he won the $100,000, what it means to him, and what he’s going to do next. We were most impressed by Cole’s skateboarding work ethic.

It’s almost like a “self contest” where you’re like, “How much stuff can I get done as fast as possible? Can I make all of it? “How fast can I make it and how good can I make it?” And then it’s almost like, you’re not bummed if you don’t win because of the money or because of anything except you’ll be bummed that you didn’t do your best. ‘Cause if you do your best and you didn’t win that’s fine. I was out there and I had an awesome time.

There are other questions as well so be sure and read Part 1 and Part 2.

Chris Bickford’s After The Storm

by The Editors on July 20, 2009

Bickford

When photographer Chris Bickford, 42, wanted to capture what it was like to surf and live in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina he went with black and white and no experience shooting surfing, according to a story on the New York Times Lens blog.

“I struggled, but that basically worked to my advantage,” Mr. Bickford said. “If I had shot the tack-sharp images you see in surf magazines, there wouldn’t have been anything interesting about it.”

Blurry photos were so artful. Click the link to view the entire slideshow.

Dig into the site and absorb his vivid portfolios, related video content and pick up a copy of the book…a must have for any skateboarder new school, old school or no school. It’s time to get schooled!

If Bryce says it’s a must have, it’s a must have.

The 2009 Hurley US Open Of Men’s Surfing

by The Editors on July 20, 2009

Hero

Each summer just when it appears that the crowds in Huntington Beach, California can’t get any larger or the sand burn much hotter in roll 400,000 people for the US Open of Surfing–the largest surfing event in the world. Running all this week (July 18-26, 2009), the event will feature what the LA Times is calling “the richest prize in competitive surfing history.” The first place pay is only $20,000, but Hurley is throwing in an extra $80,000 bringing the total men’s first prize to $100,000.

After having watched street skater Chris Cole pull down $100,000 and vert skater PLG pull in $75,000 at last week’s Maloof Money Cup, it’s kind of sad that $100,000 is still such a big deal in professional surfing. But whoever wins the mens certainly won’t be complaining about anything.

In the women’s event it may be a different story. Featuring Stephanie Gilmore, Sofia Mulanovich, and eight of the top 10 from the ASP World Tour, the women’s event will pay out a $4,500 first place prize. Anyone want to kick in any extra cash for the girls? We thought not.

Shaun Palmer On A Downhill Ride

by The Editors on July 19, 2009

Looks like Shaun Palmer is getting back in the saddle again. According to Tackled Box, he’s already gotten a second place in the California Golden State Championships in Fontana. Here’s what Shaun told Dirt Rag Mag:

“I have always done better in my sports when I stayed involved in two or three at a time. The worst thing for me is for my bad brains to sit around idle. I have to stay busy and the panic of racing downhill will keep me sharp and help me to achieve my Olympic dreams”, says Palmer. ” Of course, I miss being at the races and I miss the fans but mostly I miss hanging out with my friends, especially Peaty.”

Sounds like he’s keeping busy.

Nixon Sticks It Where The Sun Shines

by The Editors on July 19, 2009

Volta HpOne of the most annoying things about wearing a Nixon watch is when the battery dies. It’s like the watch totally quits working, and stuff. With The Volta none of us have to worry about that anymore because it uses the power of the sun to refuel itself.

The Volta makes its mark as the first rechargeable, solar powered watch in the brands 11-year history. Inspired by the Defender driving, outdoor adventurers the semi-transparent dial allows sunlight through to the solar panel below which charges the watch’s battery.

On the other arm guess that means we’d have to actually go outside. . . damn.
