Chris Miller Becomes An Alli

by The Editors on June 17, 2009

We’ve got to wonder what NBC/Dew Tour has planned with this latest announcement: Adio Footwear founder Chris Miller has just been named Chief Creative Director of Alli’s digital, consumer product, and creative functions according to a Tripp Mickle story in Sports Business Daily.

Chris is the perfect person for the job. We just hope he can survive the realities of dealing with television networks and the people who run them. That is one tough crowd.

by The Editors on June 16, 2009

Congrats to Marty Thomas for leaving the Action Sports Group and getting back to Hawaii to work with Randy Rarick on The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Seems like a perfect fit.

“We’ve come a long way in 27 years and Marty is the latest testament to that fact,” says Rarick. “The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is pretty much a year-round operation these days, from planning to execution, and Marty will be an important addition to the executive team as we continue to grow the series for future generations of surfers and surf enthusiasts around the world.”

Mr. Thomas will be the Managing Director of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and be responsible for directing ” aspects of the series: pre-promotion, execution of events, and liaison between the North Shore community, contest surfers and ASP staff.”

Great Salt Lake: Great SUP’ing Spot

by The Editors on June 16, 2009

We used to think there was really no good place for stand up paddlers to practice their art. That was until we saw this story in the Salt Lake City Tribune about SUPing on the Great Salt Lake.

Stone and fellow trainer, Greg Gbrow, offer clinics for $10 from noon to 2 p.m. every Saturday at the Great Salt Lake Marina State Park. Boards can be rented for $20 an hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Private lessons are available for $40 an hour on Saturday and on Sunday. Rentals or lessons for other days are arranged by appointment. The company occasionally holds lessons at Saltair.

Truth is, we can’t think of a better place in the world for all the SUP’ers to go and paddle, aside from maybe The Salton Sea. . .

Neff x Dim Mak Records

by The Editors on June 16, 2009

Neffdimmak

Hey, if the rave re-revolution is sweeping the world, then what perfect timing for Neff to hook up with Steve Aoki “world famous DJ” for a limited edition run of Gilligan’s Island sailor caps. Right?

The Neff x Steve Aoki Sailor cap was born off the idea of a hat that could rule the seven seas. The cap comes in two color options, black and white. Also, the duo collaborated to create some knit beanies modeled after the best selling Neff daily which are available in grey and purple.

Our favorite part of the whole collab? “These limited edition Neff x DIM MAK hats will be dropping soon in select retailers such as Urban Outfitters, Karmaloop, Zumiez and all core snow skate shops worldwide.”

Can you really put the words “limited edition” and “Urban Outfitters” in the same sentence? Apparently, Shaun Neff can.

Jereme Rodgers No Longer Famous

by The Editors on June 16, 2009

Just got a message from Felix Arguelles saying that Jereme Rodgers is no longer with the Famous Stars and Straps company.

” Famous stars and straps is releasing Jereme Rogers from their skateboard program. F.S.A.S. would like to thank Jereme for the positive contributions to the brand and wish him luck in his future endeavors. “

Luck in future endeavors? We think he’s going to need a little more than luck.

Billabong x Commonwealth Recyclers

by The Editors on June 15, 2009

Commonwealth-Billabong-Recycler-Series-2
This new “Eco-Supreme Suede” joint between Washington DC retailer Commonwealth and Billabong looks pretty sweeco. Here’s what Slamxhype had to say about them:

Made using approximately 10 recycled 12 oz. plastic bottles per board-short the term “eco friendly” could not get much more advanced. While the branding is well represented in the Custom sublimated tiger stripe “CMONFLAUGE” creating a great effect. Available only at Commonwealth & Cmonwealth.com.

Just think how many pairs of trunks they could make if they rounded up all that plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Snurfer In The Smithsonian?

by The Editors on June 15, 2009

Large Sherm PoppenSherman Poppen’s Snurfer is getting ready for a trip to Washington DC as the Smithsonian Institution is reportedly in the process of designing a display to honor the creator of the boards, according to a story on Mlive.com.

The Smithsonian’s 19 museums drew 25.2 million visitors in 2008. Poppen’s display is expected to be part of the offerings at The Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention & Innovation. Located in the National Museum of American History, The Lemelson Center is dedicated to exploring invention in history and encouraging inventive creativity in young people. . . A Smithsonian spokeswoman noted that only about 3 to 5 percent of the national museum’s entire collection is on display at any given time, so area residents looking to view the Poppen display, which is still being designed, should not expect to just show up and necessarily see it.

Guess that means some people may see it and the rest of the time it will be hidden away with the ark of the covenant.

Billabong Raises AUS$291 Million

by The Editors on June 15, 2009

Billabong-LogoBillabong needed a little cash to hold them over so what did they do? They went to the market in a “rights issue,” according to a story in The West Australian.

The oversubscribed retail rights issue raised $61 million, and the company raised around $230 million from institutions.
. . The proceeds from the entitlement offer will improve the company’s balance sheet and give it more flexibility, chairman Ted Kunkel said in a statement. . . Under the entitlement offer, eligible shareholders could subscribe for two new Billabong ordinary shares for every eleven existing ordinary shares they owned at a price of $7.50 per new share.

The new shares will begin trading on the Australian Securities Exchange on June 22.
