Surf Diva & The Battle Of La Jolla Shores

by The Editors on June 23, 2009

262Surf062209-FullSurf Diva, the La Jolla, California based women’s surf camp, retail store, and clothing brand is in the middle of a permit battle over professional surf camp access to the waves at La Jolla Shores between Menehune Surf‘s Darren Fulhorst and the City of San Diego’s Real Estate Assets Department, according to a story in The Voice of San Diego.

But how the city has distributed those permits in the last four years is threatening to put one of those companies, Menehune Surf, out of business, said Darren Fulhorst, the company’s owner. When his competitor, Surf Diva, was granted only two of the three permits it bid on in 2005, the city circumvented the formal bidding process to create a fifth permit at La Jolla Shores, which it granted to Surf Diva, and in the years since has been unwilling to account for how or why it did so.

Probably just another case of Isabelle Tihanyi handling handling her business.

Snowbroader Founder Interviewed By Shay

by The Editors on June 23, 2009

Nggshow.PhpFor the past two years Snowbroader.com has been our favorite Euro snowboarding blog. They always seem to be doing things correctly.

Shayboarder interviewed founder Nico Fermont to find out how it all got started and what’s up for the future.

In the past 3 years, we have used SnowBroader.eu as a laboratory to experiment with all sorts of Social Media tools. Today the experience we gained is at the foundation of our Social Media Agency. The Social Media tools we used helped us to give our blog more exposure but most importantly to engage with our audience. Thanks to all these tools we have build strong, loyal followings and a sense of community around SnowBroader.eu!

It’s nice to see responsible, creative people like Fermont doing up a blog with professionalism and authenticity. Apparently, it is possible.

Salty Dogs Hit The Surf

by The Editors on June 23, 2009

090623 Dogs1

The 4th Annual Loews Surf Dog competition presented by the Loews Coronado Bay Resort was held in Imperial Beach, California on Saturday, June 20, 2009, according to a story on Newslite.TV.

The dogs competed in three different cat-egories for those under 40 pounds in weight, over 40 pounds, and teams, where humans joined the dogs on the boards. . . Some looked more comfortable than others perched on the surfboards, and while a few wore lifejackets, others were more than happy in just sunglasses.

Nice that the event was held at a beach where the water really can’t get much poopier.

Police Play Part In Go Skateboarding Day

by The Editors on June 21, 2009

Picture 2-2It was Go Skateboarding Day after all so there’s really no surprise that the police got in on the action. In Calgary, officers had to deal with what The Vancouver Sun called “a rash of mischief,” and even used their helicopter:

“It was resource intensive and included (our use of) the helicopter,” said Duty Inspector Vic Trickett. “We had skateboarders going up the wrong way on streets and avenues, going through red lights, causing a great deal of disruption to the regular traffic flow. In my opinion, they were endangering themselves and endangering others.”

At Love Park in Philadelphia the police held it down all day and threatened everyone with $1,000 fines if they got on their boards, according to Larry West’s blog Angry, Young, and Poor.

Look, if we catch you, it’s a $1000 fine, you loose your board, and you go to jail! I’ve already got 10 skateboards in my trunk! Now I’m giving you a warning!” . . . The other officer stood there, loosing his patience as I tried to calmly explain that… well, they were wrong. Its always an odd spot to be in, and you rarely ever win.

Afghanistan Skate 2But in Afghanistan things went the other way. Police actually provided an armed escort for members of the Skateistan crew, according to a story on TVNZ.co.nz:

With sirens blaring, officers shouted commands through a megaphone at motorists telling them to make way for the kids of Afghanistan’s first skateboarding school: Skateistan. . . “In the name of God!” cheered one man at the side of the road, clapping and smiling in disbelief. . . “Long live Afghanistan!” the children shouted in reply as they skated past. . . Wearing white T-shirts adorned with “Skateistan” logos, the children zipped from the national stadium – once the scene of public Taliban executions – to another part of the city to take part in a competition in honour of world Go Skateboarding Day.

And that’s just the kind of police interaction we’d all like on GSD.

Meyerhoffer’s Weird Surfboards

by The Editors on June 21, 2009

Thomas Meyerhoffer is one of those “designers” who makes everything look a little too easy. He’s designed products for Apple, Scott, SonyEricsson, and furniture for Capellini. Of course, his real passion is surfing. And he’s been creating these hour-glass looking longboards for a couple years now. The San Francisco Chronicle checked in with Meyerhoffer last week to see how things are going.

Many designers add. Meyerhoffer took away. . . He cut out the sides, creating a distinct waist and hip that extended the contours – and benefits – of a short board. . . He tapered the tail to increase speed, but kept its length to balance the weight up front. There, the width remains to make nose-riding possible. . . “I was pleasantly surprised,” said Maverick’s surfer Peter Mel. “I didn’t know how good it would feel for how odd it looks. It just had a real nice flow to it.”

We still think they look too weird to ride. And, honestly, why would anyone want a longboard to turn like shortboard? If you want a board that turns like a shortboard, then ride one.

No Skateboarding Day

by The Editors on June 21, 2009

NoskateboardingIt’s not all love and kisses in the world of skateboarding today. Louisiana skater Neal Boyd has set up a website to explain his problems with Go Skateboarding Day. It’s called No $kateboarding Day.

This site was created by a skateboarder in response to some corny corporate marketing. Skateboarding is great, spending a day skating is sick, and taking the day off to skate is something I can plead guilty to. However, skateboarding is also largely illegal, it’s loud, and it’s dirty. I like it like that. . . . Any excuse is a good excuse to skate, but this holiday shit has more corporate sponsors than a Nascar driver. . . Anyway, go skate and celebrate every moment that you get to ride… but don’t buy into any bullshit about what this contrived holiday really is… a big fucking commercial.

Can’t really say there is too much to disagree with here.

by The Editors on June 21, 2009

ElementlogosmallApparently, Element is taking Go Skateboarding Day pretty literally. On June 19, 2009 Billabong’s skateboarding brand Element made some “cuts” to their work force and gave a few people a little more go skateboarding time.

We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
