Randy Laybourne’s Timebomb-Lapse

by The Editors on May 18, 2009

We never knew how much wall rubbing went into Randy’s work. Apparently, he likes getting a feel for the space. . . Uh, sorry. Someone just told us that Randy wasn’t actually “rubbing the wall” at the beginning of the clip, he was sketching the mural out before he began painting. Whoops.

New Smyrna Sharks Get Three More

by The Editors on May 18, 2009

Those pesky Florida sharks are still at it in New Smyrna Beach, according to a story in the Orlando Sentinel.

This weekend saw three surfers bitten by sharks, at the main spot where this happens: the surf zone just south of the inlet in New Smyrna Beach. . . Two surfers were bitten 9 a.m. Saturday morning, within 10 minutes of each other, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Scott Petersohn. . . .A third surfer was bitten around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at that same location, Petersohn.

We’ve said this before, but it seems shark bites are pretty high price to pay for Florida waves.

Fashion Trifecta: RS, JCPenney, The Dew Tour

by The Editors on May 18, 2009

RsbysheckWe all know that Ryan Sheckler’s new Wicked clothing line RS by Sheckler is hitting JCPenney this summer just in time for back to school, but what we didn’t know were WMG’s Steve Astephen’s plans for the brand.

In a story on Sports Business Journal he says they play to make millions.

Sheckler’s agent . . . hopes to build the new brand, which launches this summer, into a $100 million business that earns Sheckler $10 million a year.

Possible? With JCPenney as the “official retail partner” of the Dew Tour some synergies could happen. If people still shop at Penneys. Do they?

J. Grant Brittain’s Pool Party Photo Rant

by The Editors on May 18, 2009

051609 52AWe saw The Skateboard Mag’s J. Grant Brittain manning the deck with the hordes of photographers at the Pro-Tec Pool Party on Saturday, but we never got a chance to say hello.

Maybe that’s because Grant spent most of his day trying to shoot around people who weren’t looking through their viewfinders and were holding their cameras “out at arm’s length and just shooting willy-nilly anything that moved.”

Luckily, Grant outlined it all in a post on The Skateboard Mag site titled: Skate Photographer’s Etiquette And Technique Or Lack Thereof. Here’s a small piece of it.

Unfortunately, the practice of not looking through the viewfinder not only affects the practitioner’s photos, but also affects the photographers’ photos around them. In one instance, I had a photo framed(composed) and then had a hand holding a camera come into frame from Stage Right and at the same time a photographer walking by, stopping and taking a photo with camera held at waist level in front of me.

Grant has probably taught more people to shoot skate photos than anyone in the business, so it might be a good idea for everyone to read his entire post. We’re reading it again because sometimes when you have Chris Miller in the combi lofting huge on every wall it’s very easy to forget the rules.

Billabong Goes To Market, Blames America

by The Editors on May 17, 2009

Billabong-LogLooks like analysts were right both ways when they guessed last week that Billabong was either looking to raise more money or going to announce a lower profit outlook thanks to the flailing American clothing market, according to a stories on Reuters, The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Australian surfwear retailer Billabong International (BBG.AX) is looking to raise A$290 million ($217.6 million) to pay down debt, with a share sale priced at a 29 percent discount to its last trade. . . Billabong said on Monday it was raising the money through a fully underwritten 2-for-11 rights offer to institutions, at A$7.50 a share, worth A$200 million, and a matching offer to retail shareholders, which would raise up to A$90 million. . . The company has adopted a six-month freeze on hiring new staff across all markets and will not replace staff who leave the company.

Still Life With Snow, Part Deux Opening

by The Editors on May 17, 2009

051609 77L

Last night, while the finals of the The Pro-Tec Pool Party were blazing away at The Block in The City of Orange a more serene scene was unfolding in Costa Mesa, California at the opening reception of Still Life With Snow Part Duex at The ARTery @ The Lab.

With their successful gallery showing in The Village at Mammoth Lakes on the weekend of May 2, 2009, Torrey Cook and The Machine Design wanted to give people in SoCal the chance to view and purchase images from the Still Life With Snow show so they brought it south.

051609 78LThe ARTery is an intimate gallery made up of three shipping containers placed off to the side of Orange County’s Anti-Mall The Lab and is a perfectly understated venue for the works of some of snowboarding’s best photographers.

Still Life With Snow Part Duex includes images from a who’s who list of shred soul stealers including: Trevor Graves, Mark Gallup, Cheyenne Ellis, Shem Roose, James Cassimus, Chris Carnel, Danny Zapalac, Jeff Curtes, Jesse Loomis, Ryan Hughes, Alisa Mokler-Harper, Cole Barash, Christy Chaloux, Tim Zimmerman, Embry Rucker, Ryan Boyes, Susie Floros, Rob Mathis, and Matt Clausen.

In fact, Torrey Cook has gathered so many iconic images that cruising the show is like floating through snowboarding history. We remembered many images from the magazines, but seeing them together and on a gallery wall was impressive. Each photo cued another memory. Our favorite was the classic James Cassimus photo of Jake Burton airing out one of his original designs (nose rope included) under the blazing Southern California sun at Wrightwood. It seems so long ago, then again, not really.

Still Life With Snow, Part Deux runs through May 24, 2009 at The ARTery @The Lab, 2930 Bristol Street, Cosa Mesa CA 92626. Daily Hours: 5pm to 9pm (closed Mon/Tues).

Pro-Tec Pool Party: Observe And Report

by The Editors on May 17, 2009

051609 34

We spent most of the day at the 2009 Pro-Tec Pool Party at The Vans Skatepark at The Block in The City of Orange, California and when we think back there was so much mind blowing skateboarding that it all became a bit of a blur that went a little like this (click here for some photos):

Grind, snake, grind, mumble, mumble, Tony Alva, yeah, Tony Alva, Chris Miller, Bucky Lasek, near-miss, near-miss, Captain and Casey dressed a pool boys, Red in a mirror-shaded speedo, loud, loud, loud, Steve Van Doren flipping burgers, Steve Alba stretching, huge air, Dave Duncan on the mic and we can’t understand a word, Steve Luther staring Conversations, a girl skating in a skirt, winks from Rob Brink, Lyn-Z Adams Hawkins all grown up, Doug Paladini shaking hands, T-Mag, Bryce Kanights, Joel Gomez, Daily Habit Director Jen Goodman, Chris Overholser on the move, Geoff Rowley lurking, Jamey Stone on a cane, Christian Hosoi and his over 30 fans, that Pedro Barros kid wrecks this place, Dave Carnie’s weird beard, Ashton Maxfield sans glasses, consultant Mike Chantry, proud dad Dennis Jenson, Mark Waters and Bob Schmeltzer, the evasively ethereal Vans_66, Bob Burnquist and his roller bag, a Hi-Def backstage tour, Carleton Curtis, Dan Maiman, and John Stouffer, Danny Kass wandering the mall in bright colors, Desiree Astorga on a curb, Rockstar on ice, kids running the park, and reports of Mos Def.

We do know a couple things: one, no one skates the combi with more power and style than Chris Miller, and two, with the way Bucky Lasek rolls this place he will keep winning The Pool Party until he doesn’t want to win it anymore.

Biography Of A Flea

by The Editors on May 17, 2009

The Santa Cruz Sentinel tells the story of the “hold-down” of Darryl “Flea” Virostko’s life. It wasn’t at Maverick’s. It was a week after a group of his family and friends held a little intervention that Flea finally drove himself to Monterey’s Beacon House drug rehab center and checked in.

When nurses admitted him, Virostko’s blood alcohol content registered at 0.28 on the breathalyzer. A BAC of 0.30 and above is usually enough to put a person in a coma, if not flat out kill him.

The rest is classic story of drug abuse (strangely similar to this clip we just watched of Steve-O) featuring sadness, loss, methamphetamine, and a blown professional surfing career. But that is all old news, the story claims, because now Flea is back and has been sober for eight months.

Today, the intensity in Virostko’s face has returned. The hunger is there. He’s surfing every day. He’s following a healthy diet. He’s moved to Ben Lomond with his girlfriend and three dogs, Mija, Riddle and Passion, to “get away from my wreckage.” Virostko surfed Maverick’s twice this winter – on the only two legitimate Mav’s swells that came through – including the Nov. 30 “Turkey Day” swell, which saw some of the largest, cleanest paddle-in Mav’s in years. He managed to nail a handful of heavy drops.

And that’s good news.
