What is it about being attacked by a shark that makes people want to get right back in the water? Glenn Orgias, the Australian surfer who lost his left hand to a 2.5 meter great white while surfing at Bondi Beach, has spent his downtime working as an Australian Red Cross Blood Service ambassador but he’s looking forward to going surfing again, according to a story in The Sydney Morning Herald.
He told the Seven Network he hopes to receive a prosthetic hand but it won’t be waterproof, forcing him to improvise when he gets back on a surfboard. . . .”Yeah, I’m not sure how to push up on the board yet and hopefully I can get back on and get up.”
Tough man, Glenn.

Timothy W. Melvin, 39, of central Illinois has been sentenced to “60 days in jail and 18 months probation for running over his 12-year-old son while towing the boy on a skateboard,” according to a story in the Herald & Review.
Testifying at his sentencing hearing, Melvin said he did not realize when he entered his guilty plea that he was admitting he knew he was towing his son through Fairview Park as the boy hung on to a side window of his car. He said he believed the plea was for not requiring Zachary to wear a helmet as he skateboarded in the park.
Seems like the death of his son Zachary R. Melvin would be enough punishment, but Timothy’s seven prior convictions for various offenses would suggest that Melvin is not a quick learner.

Like many fans of the WCT tour we cringed yesterday as Kelly Slater fell off wave after wave in the opening minutes of his round 2 heat against Spain’s Aritz Aranburu. It wasn’t until the last two seconds of the heat that we saw the Slater we know and love spring back to life with an inverted snap that reminded everyone that they were watching the world’s greatest surfer on a bad day. But the wave just didn’t have enough on it for Kelly to advance.
Leave it to The Sydney Morning Herald to put Kelly’s third first-heat defeat into proper perspective:
Kelly Slater bombed out of the Billabong Pro in Tahiti yesterday to continue the biggest fall from grace by a king since Henry VIII took a liking to Anne Boleyn. Slater, the greatest of all the surfers, needs a miracle to retain his world title after losing to little-known Spaniard Aritz Aranburu at Teahupoo.
It was a humble and contemplative Slater who answered GT’s questions following the heat–sometimes with the painful honesty of a warrior who has lost something important but just doesn’t know what it is.
“That may have just given me an excuse for a big, long vacation,” he said. “I don’t know yet. It’s really decision time for me. With that many 17ths, you’re really hard pressed to win a world title. I’m not here to just make up the numbers, but I don’t want to fall off the map, either. I guess I kind of have, though. Numbers-wise, I’m still within the possibility of getting in late in the year, but I don’t know. I guess I have a lot on my mind.”
We’re hoping he continues in the hunt, but then again it’s tough to watch a hero repeatedly limping off the field of play.

ESPN has done restaurants, shoes, skateboards, why not slap the X Games logo on some China bikes while they’re at it.
“XG3 marks ESPN’s first foray into high performance action sports gear and will continue to build on the momentum that we have created in consumer products,” said Steve Cipolla, vice president and general manager, ESPN Consumer Products. “Innovation and authenticity are the hallmarks of every ESPN brand – as one of the first BMX superstars, Mat Hoffman perfectly embodies these attributes. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Mat, as we launch XG3 and continue to expand the X Games franchise World-Wide.”
We’re more excited by the possibility of some X Games snowboards by Todd Richards. [click to continue…]

After Billabong reduced their profit forecasts and announced plans to sell more shares to “pay down debt” the analysts apparently turned on the company. According to a story on Bloomberg at least four brokers have cut the stock to their lowest rankings:
The stock’s rating was cut to “sell” by Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, “underweight” by JPMorgan Chase & Co., and “underperform” by both Macquarie Group Ltd. and Credit Suisse. . . “The old Billabong story was a seductive growth story as surf fashion took market share in the urban and street apparel segments,” Greg Dring, a Sydney-based Macquarie analyst, said in a note to clients today. “The new Billabong story seems to center on customers that are increasingly short-term focused and are reluctant to order for the future.” Dring cut earnings estimates in 2010 by 23 percent.
But we still haven’t really figured out the whole analysts game.

According to legal documents linked up by Josh Hunter at Transworld Business, Zumiez has apparently offered $7.2 million for The Active Wallace Group.
Based on the offer made by Zumiez, Active proposes to sell its assets for a total consideration of up to as much as $7.2 million cash, depending upon the outcome of Zumiez valuation of inventory and determination of number of stores to acquire. The total consideration offered to be paid by Zumiez in this case is based on the following formula:
1.) Inventory valued at the lower of cost or market, as determined by an appraiser hired by Zumiez;
2.) $100,000 per store to be purchased by Zumiez; and
3.) Assumption of gift card certificates up to $1.3 million, with total consideration to be adjusted if gift card liability is in excess of $1.3 million.
Crazy days indeed. Odd how quickly things can turn around. Click here to download the entire legal document from TransWorld Business. We’d suggest you read Tiffany Montgomery’s story on Shop-eat-surf.com, too, but you’d have to become an executive member to access the entire piece.

According to a story on Bloomberg.com VF Corp’s CEO Eric Wiseman is letting people know that he and the company are in “active discussions” on an outdoor/action sports acquisition. Wonder who that could be?
“There are lots of really interesting discussions about brands that may be appropriate,” Wiseman, 53, said in a May 15 interview at VF’s headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina. “I hope we can make an interesting acquisition this year.”
The word before was that VF was gunning for DC Shoes. But with everything going down lately, we’re wondering why VF would take one little bite, when they could just chomp down on the whole thing. . .

Former WCT surfer Shane Bevan was fired from his job as a baggage handler at Oceania Aviation Services twenty months ago after his employer accused him of participating in Queensland’s Coolum Classic surf contest while on “sick leave with a bad back” according to a story in The Australian.
But now, after two reviews by Australia’s Industrial Relations Commission it has been determined that Bevan should not have been fired.
The IRC initially upheld his sacking but, on appeal, a commission full bench last week supported Mr Bevan’s claim that the termination was harsh, unjust and unreasonable and ordered the company to pay compensation.
Nice work, Shane.

When we read about Kyle Fischer getting jumped and “fully concused” on The Dirty Kids blog we weren’t sure what they were talking about. Now the Deseret News explains it all.
Salt Lake police were looking Monday for a group that robbed a man and beat him unconscious with his own skateboard. . . . The 21-year-old man was riding on 800 South near 200 East about 1:45 a.m. Saturday when three men attacked him, said Salt Lake police spokeswoman Lara Jones. The attackers beat the victim with his own skateboard, took his wallet, and left the victim on the ground unconscious, Jones said. . . The man regained consciousness before being sent to the hospital in serious condition.
We’re glad Kyle Fischer is okay and back to his Youtube video posting antics.
