Griber Survives Everest Slide

by The Editors on May 6, 2009

Snowboard mountaineer and adventure cinematographer John Griber is lucky to be alive after an avalanche hit him and his crew while filming on Mt. Everest last Saturday, according to a story in the Jackson Hole News & Guide.

It happened while Griber was descending the Khumbu icefall. A serac collapsed 3,000 feet above Griber on the west shoulder of Everest and came crashing down toward him. . . .“I was directly in its path,” Griber wrote in an e-mail to the Jackson Hole News&Guide. “There was no running from it. I jumped behind about a 15-foot serac but I was still clipped to the fixed line and couldn’t get close enough to feel super safe. The slide went over top of me; the force knocked the wind out of me; and snow filled my mouth and I couldn’t breath or see anything for 20 seconds.”

Apparently, no one was hurt in the slide. Griber is on Everest this spring collecting film footage for Eddie Bauer’s new clothing line First Ascent. How’s that for extreme advertising?

Rome Looks For A Few Good Flophouses

by The Editors on May 6, 2009

FlophouseThe marketing heads at Rome Snowboard Design Syndicate apparently get all powered up from perusing photos of stacked, stinking, snow shred houses, what other reason could they have for their new Flophouse photo contest?

The SDS has been collecting entries we’ve gotten throughout the season, getting ready to vote on the World’s Best Flophouse of the 2009. The winning crew will get 5 Rome decks to fight over. We’ll be deciding around mid July, so get your photos from the season together and get to uploading by the entry deadline, June 15th.

They are looking for photos of homes that are knee deep in moldy first-layer fungus and all the stench that goes with it. Sounds like delicious marketing. Follow the jump for all the details. Or click here to send email to Ridercouncil@romesnowboards.com

Cuba Skate Liberation: The Nieratkos’ Trip

by The Editors on May 5, 2009

6A00D8341C625053Ef0115706Fbe84970B-400Wi.JpgChris Nieratko and his pregnant wife took a trip to Cuba recently to hand out quality skateboards to the kids who can’t get them thanks to international politics. Here’s what was up:

Recently a crew of 18 friends and I flew to Cuba (via Panama) to give away skateboards to the kids down there who can’t get them because of the embargo. The full stories will appear in Vice and The Skateboard Mag in a few months. You can read the background story here. Or watch this inspirational little documentary on the scene down in Havana that prompted us to put the trip together.

This should be interesting. . .

Motor-Powered Roller Bags For Lazy Travelers

by The Editors on May 5, 2009

Motor RollerAs if snowboarders weren’t lazy enough already, now comes word of electrically powered snowboard bag that rolls itself, according to Tech Radar.

The patented handle and motorised wheel tech and the new hybrid bags’ lightweight, super-strong frame’s tough and long-lasting PC ABS body is really what you are paying for here. . .Live Luggage’s patented “anti-gravity” handle works very well indeed and will ensure that when you are carrying a large snowboard or surfboard, the bulky item is kept at a good distance from the user’s arm and bod

Apparently, Live Luggage has included an electric motor that powers the wheels in the roller bag. Why not just put another set of wheels and a steering wheel on it and call it a cart?

West 49 Says Hell No

by The Editors on May 5, 2009

Logo 51143This comes as no surprise, but it appears that the board of directors at West 49 has rejected Adrenalina’s offer to purchase the company.

West 49 Inc.’s board of directors has unanimously rejected the unsolicited proposal as it does not believe that pursuing Adrenalina’s proposal is in the best interests of West 49 Inc. or its shareholders. The board of directors noted that Adrenalina is an unlisted U.S. public company that has recently indicated that it does not have the financial resources to file its legally required annual report, that has an unproven business model and operates a very small number of highly expensive retail stores in the U.S., and that has recently made a similar and unsuccessful unsolicited attempt to acquire Pacific Sunwear of California, Inc.

Owwwhh, burn.

King Shit Hits The Print

by The Editors on May 5, 2009

Coverweb

We rarely get excited about skateboard magazines anymore. Not sure if it’s because they come out too often or what.

But when former SBC Skateboard’s Ryan Stutt, Harry Gils, and Scotty McDonald team up with Big Brother’s Dave Carnie and Chris Nieratko to create a magazine guest art directed by Todd Bratrud, well that’s something that gets our old ink-huffing neurons firing again. Even if King Shit is only doing two issues a summer.
