by The Editors on April 26, 2009

The waiting period for the 6 star Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro begins next Tuesday April 28, 2009.

Lowers is one of the few singular events on the ASP World Qualifying Series schedule that has played a critical role in defining the path that future greats would walk down. Jeff Booth, Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Shane Beschen, CJ Hobgood and Benny Bourgeois all have hoisted the trophy.

True. But the big question: will this swell hold on until then?

Skatepark School Bus Transformer

by The Editors on April 24, 2009

When students of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California were asked to redesign the school bus and to “improve the efficiency and safety of buses and to imagine at least two other functions for them in addition to transporting students,” Andrew Kang knew exactly what he wanted to do:

Andrew Kang, sponsored by Subaru and DC Shoes, designed a bus that can be converted into a mobile skateboard park, with ramps that unfold. The bus also functions as a portable art classroom whose interior can be repeatedly painted.

A bus like that would make going to school worthwhile.

Action Sports Are So Alluring

by The Editors on April 24, 2009

Billcarter.JpgAccording to a story published today on MediaPost by Fuse Marketing partner Bill Carter says, “Gen Y is drawn to action sports.”

The amount of money spent on traditional sports marketing far exceeds what is spent on action sports, yet action sports continue to replace traditional sports in popularity — with participation numbers in action sports rising at the expense of traditional sports. . . The power of the action sports market has yet to be completely realized. For non-endemic corporations, breaking into this market isn’t as easy as it may seem. Skaters, surfers and snowboarders traditionally are leery of non-endemic brands.

Luckily Fuse Marketing is there to let major corporations exchange their money for action sports credibility. Just look what they did for Right Guard Extreme.

Hot Girls Holding Skateboards

by The Editors on April 24, 2009

Skate and Annoy’s Kilwag alerted us this morning to a set of photos of mostly naked girls holding skateboards from a British lad mag Front which apparently features “Britain’s fittest girls.” Here’s what he said about it:

The latest issue tells readers to “Put on your kneepads, take out your shiny helmet and do some serious grinding as Rosie and Hettie go skate!” Errr, yeah. Rosie and Hettie seem more interested in other activities actually. I’m going to go out on a limb and call them, ahem, posers! Yes, I am that witty!

As if we needed another reason to look at photos of skateboards and Vans shoes. Click here for the NSFW collection.

Maybe Fortress Won’t Dump Whistler

by The Editors on April 24, 2009

1617Peak.JpgWhistler Blackcomb’s President and COO Dave Brownlie says that while he can’t comment on Intrawest or its owner Fortress Investment Group, LLC and how the companies are going to solve their $1.7 billion debt crisis, he doesn’t think Whistler Blackcomb will be sold, according to a story in Pique News Magazine.

“I can say that Whistler Blackcomb is seen as a core asset to the success of Intrawest,” said Dave Brownlie on Tuesday afternoon. . . “As a result, I am very confident that Whistler Blackcomb is not up for sale at this time.”

Sounds like something we’ve heard from more than a few CEOs on the eve of a sale.

Surfer Knocked Out At Crystal Cove

by The Editors on April 24, 2009

A surfer who was found floating face down yesterday in the surf off Laguna Beach, Calfornia’s Crystal Cove State Beach likely hit his head on the ocean floor, according to a story in the Daily Pilot.

Newport Beach Battalion Chief Steve Bunting said the man, whose name and age were not immediately available, was surfing with friends Thursday morning when he injured himself and couldn’t swim to shore on his own. . . The group was surfing on the southern tip of Crystal Cove, also known as El Morro, about 8 a.m. when one of them called 911 about their fellow surfer. One in the group, a trained Emergency Medical Technician and student at Saddleback College, swam to his friend and turned him face up, opening his airway, Bunting said. The surfer was breathing and talking as the men swam him to shore, he said.

The man was helicoptered to Mission Hospital’s trauma center and admitted with moderate injuries.

Shaun White Snowboarding On A Mac

by The Editors on April 24, 2009

Shot4.Jpg

Apple Games has a poetic write up on Shaun White Snowboarding for the Mac.

You survey the daunting mountainside before you. Other snowboarders rocket down the slope, spraying a fine mist of powder in their wake. You strap on your snowboard, take a deep breath, and start your run, the board gliding above the snow as you pick up speed. You try a trick known as butter: you lean forward, flatten out, and then lean the other way and flatten out again, completing a 360-degree circle.

Almost makes us want to plop down at our desk and hit the shred.

Mammoth Mountain Is Still Sending

by The Editors on April 24, 2009

042309 55-1

We’re pretty sure there is no better place for spring shredding than Mammoth Mountain. The Unbound Main Park is still kicking with all the jumps, rails, and two halfpipes, the top of the mountain is littered with untracked big wall corn runs, and the crowds are light.

The mountain is staying open until Memorial Day, the Volcom RV just rolled into town last night for the 2009 Peanut Butter and Rail Jam Championships on Saturday April 25, 2009, so there really is no reason not to be here.
