Sportnet Gets A Grinding

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

Sport-Grind-Tm.JpgOn March 19, 2009 when Sportnet and GrindTV announced that they were joining forces to create a super online sports company backed by Softbank Capital many wondered how long it would take the new company to realize efficiencies in the work force. The answer: about 10 days.

According to sources familiar with the situation more than 30 people were relieved of their duties at Sportnet yesterday, leaving the group with approximately 12 employees. Apparently, GrindTV co-founders Erik Hawkins and Greg Morrow are holding on to the individual site editors (which is good) and their own employees, as GrindTV staff reportedly did not experienced any cuts yesterday.

Cop Pays Skatepark Membership For Kids

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

When Naples Police Officer Jullian Cercone, 26, caught Jose Vega, 13, his brother Michael and their two friends skateboarding in an area where they weren’t supposed to she could have roughed them up. But she didn’t, according to a story in Naples News.

Instead, she found a solution that would make the businesses happy all while keeping the boys rolling. . . “If it wasn’t for her, we wouldn’t be skateboarding,” Jose said. . . . Cercone also used her encounters as an opportunity to build a relationship with kids in the community. . . .“I think it’s important for the young kids in the community to develop a good rapport between themselves and the police department,” Cercone said. “They are the future of our county.”

Cercone went so far building rapport that she actually paid for the kids’ membership at the local skatepark. See, not all cops are power mad authority freaks. Apparently, it’s just the dudes. . .

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

29Le9Hy.Jpg[April Fools Day Story 2009] With Proactive Ink-X there always is a second chance and no one knows that better than Antwuan Dixon, Jereme Rogers and Braydon Szafranski, all of whom have reportedly signed on to back Proactiv’s new face tattoo removal creme, according to a press release posted on the South Of The North blog.

Known for its wide range of celebrity supporters, Proactiv will feature the three new members of the skate world in the brand’s 11th national television program, which began airing nationwide in America during peak face tattoo season. The new cycle will serve as a unique platform for the skaters to share his experience of what a face tattoo has done to their position in society. . . adds Rogers, “When you put it on your face, you can feel it actually getting the ink out. It feels like you have a brand new face. I might get a face tattoo of a dolphin sitting in a recliner hitting a bong like my friend Jimmy got in Cabo on spring break. I mean shit, it ain’t nothin’ Ink-X can’t get out.”

Hey, we never talk shit about a man’s need to get paid.

Hobgoods On Whole New Drive Thru

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

As Surf Hobgood Nascar 275.Jpg[April Fools Day Story 2009] Looks like the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach Dream Tour event will be missing the Hobgoods, according to a story on ESPN.com/Action.

Citing a change of heart and that they “just want to get back to their Florida roots,” the twin brothers have returned to Florida to pursue a career in NASCAR. Apparently over the last couple weeks the two have been repeatedly overheard babbling about “shaking and baking.” While it’s not clear exactly what this means, it has been confirmed that they “just wanna drive fast.”

Wish we could say we were going to miss those two. Truth is they’ve always been better drivers than surfers anyway.

Don Brown Off The SPoT Party Team

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

Donbrown[April Fools Day Story 2009] Looks like Sole Technology’s Mr. Party All The Time Don Brown is throwing in his big red Skatepark of Tampa drinking cup, according to a press release sent out today.

“I just know it is time for me to jump from this DRINKING SHIP sinking ship. I’ll always remember partying myself into the slammer in Tampa with the SPoT hooligans! I just know that they have bigger bankruptcy issues to focus on right now than bailing me out of jail, so I’m quitting their Party Team for now,” said Don Brown, former SPoT Party Team Member. “Without the SPoT Party Team to regularly bail me out of jail I might find myself locked up with no alternative, so I will be seeking sponsorship from Liberty Bail Bonds. Does anybody know their team manager?”

Never thought we live to see this day. . . follow the jump for all the info.

686 Releases The Multiple Wind Breaker

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

Breakingwinda[April Fools Day Story 2009] With the warm shred weather finally hitting, 686 is happy to announce the release of their newest light weight jacket: the Multiple Wind Breaker.

Available in Kelly Green and Black, this lightweight, all-over printed shell jacket keeps you just the right temperature while tearing up the spring snow, yet is long enough to trap flatulence for extended personal enjoyment.

“There is nothing like smoldering on the lift and basking in the warmth of your own ass breeze,” said 686 social stench marketer Hoo Cheit. “In the winter wearing heavy gear it’s easy to trap odors, but in the spring it’s much more difficult. That’s why we added 8 inches to the waist of the jacket. But the best part is our patented third ‘multiple’ sleeve.”

The third sleeve? Yes, 686 has added an exhaust sleeve that runs up the back of the jacket from the seat and over the shoulder for riders who are more interested in mainlining their crack steam. Cheit says the sleeve can be placed over the nose and mouth for full force anal emission ingestion.

The Multiple Wind Breaker features reverse 1,000MM waterproofing/1,000 GM breathability rating to make sure the farts won’t get out until you let them.

Skatepark Of Tampa Goes Belly Up

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

Easycomeeasygo.Jpg[April Fools Day Story 2009] Looks like even the coolest guys in the skateboarding world can be dumb with their money. In a story released this morning the Skatepark of Tampa has announced that it will be filing for chapter 11 reorganization protection after opening too many stores and running up nearly $20 million in debt to a Tampa gentlemen’s club.

Owner Brian Schaefer said that he hopes the bankruptcy filing, while painful, will allow the company, which is celebrating its 16th anniversary, to begin the healing process and return to being a strong company with 993 stores instead of 1001. . . “We look forward to creating a great Skatepark of Tampa that is an asset to all of its partners,” he said. . . . Schaefer and GM, Ryan Clements, have met with 30 vendors in the past three weeks to explain the situation, Schaefer said. He said vendors have been very supportive and have said they will ship fresh goods to Skatepark of Tampa on a COD basis. Some have even said they will offer SPoT credit terms as soon as Skatepark of Tampa filed for bankruptcy, Schaefer said.

Shaun White Tossing In The Rings

by The Editors on April 1, 2009

White Heat[April Fools Day Story 2009] At a press conference today Shaun White announced that he is going to ditch his runs at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver so he can focus on his acting, according to a story on Methodmag.com.

White has apparently signed a “multi-million dollar deal with Fox Searchlight Pictures to star alongside Miley Cyrus in a feature film about a snowboarder who “foils a terrorist plot to set off a dirty bomb during the Winter Olympics.”

White seemed enthusiastic not only about his new career, but also about filming alongside Miley Cyrus, who has been cast as his love interest in the upcoming blockbuster, whose working title is “White Heat”. “I can’t wait till principal photography starts, I will miss competing but I’ve been doing contests for as long as I can remember and the time is right to start a new phase of my life and career”, explained the young superstar. White’s main sponsor, Burton Snowboards, decided to continue to support him despite the “Flying Tomato’s” (as he is commonly referred to) decision to forego competitive snowboarding.

According to Methodmag, White Heat will be in theaters in early 2010 “just in time for the Winter Olympics.”
