Snowboard Magazine’s Issues With Women

by The Editors on January 19, 2009

WomensbStorm Mountain Publishing has created a special issue of Snowboard magazine especially for advertisers who want to promote their women’s products. It’s called The Women’s Issue. And it is just one of the intellectual property items SMP picked up when they purchased Future Snowboarding Magazine. You may remember it as the infamous unpublished fourth issue of The Drift.

“Check out the hottest female riders from our exclusive photo shoot at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego.”

This thing sounds loaded with all girl action. Here’s what featured hottie snowboarder girl Gretchen Bleiler had to say about the magazine that features her along with Tara Dakides, Jamie Anderson, Torah Bright and more:

Because of the beautiful imagery, juicy content and overall look of the mag, the SNOWBOARD Women’s Issue has absolutely bridged the gap in being able to please both the hardcore and the recreational snowboard girl. I loved reading every page.”

Juicy content? Bridging the gap? Hardcore? Ah, okay, but wouldn’t the girls just rather be featured in a regular issue?

GrindTV Moves To The Money

by The Editors on January 19, 2009

Grindtv-1We’re never been big fans of GrindTV, but apparently they are moving from El Sugundo to Aliso Viejo’s TechSpace to be closer to potential sources of action sports revenue, according to a story in the Orange County Business Journal.

“We work with a lot of folks in the action sports industry who are headquartered in Orange County and it made sense for us to bring GrindTV to Orange County,” said Erik Hawkins, the company’s chief executive.

Yeah, the move makes sense. The GrindTV site? It is actually getting much better lately. We’re kind of surprised.

Great White Shark Tow At

by The Editors on January 19, 2009

Looks like Arnette hooked up an ad agency that specializes in “viral video.” It must be working a little, huh? The Daily Mail wrote a story about it.

Timmy Turner’s Wonderful Horrible Life

by The Editors on January 18, 2009

ESPN’s Micah Abrams travels to Tofino, British Columbia with miracle man Timmy Turner to get the inside story on one of surfing’s most dedicated feral filmmakers. And he definitely got the story. Good waves? Well, that’s a different story all together.

Where The Wild Skateboards Are

by The Editors on January 17, 2009

Wildthingsboards21-440X486

Last time we spoke to Spike Jonze he was speeding down Melrose on an old beater ten-speed with a bunch of his friends. He said he was taking a break from editing (or re-editing) Where The Wild Things Are. That was a while ago and we still haven’t seen many images from the movie, but according to Slash Film, Girl Skateboards will be releasing a few Wild Things boards.

The skateboard company that Jonze co-founded, Girl Skateboards Company, will be releasing a limited series of skateboards featuring the monsters from the film adaptation.

We’ve got no confirmation and it seems kind of strange, but we’re hoping they make some micro-minis, you know, for the kids.

Karina Petroni’s Never Quit Tour

by The Editors on January 17, 2009

New Model 06Florida-based professional surfer Karina Petroni has a message for teens: make sure you load your personal website with tons and tons of really hot, almost-nude, bikini photos (and video) and you’ll be a success in whatever you do because sex sells.

Oh, wait. That’s not it? Ah . . . oh yeah, the message is that Karina and her family have created the The Never Quit Tour, according to a story in the Ponte Vedra Record.

The Never Quit! program is comprised of several components. The first is a lecture where Karina Petroni will talk about the importance of setting and pursuing both short and long term goals. As someone who found her direction early and has been able to achieve success young she feels she can offer insights for teens and young adults and be a role model within their own age group.

She also talks about how important it is to stay healthy (especially if you’re going to model in your bikini nearly naked) and that family is important. We’d have to agree with pretty much everything Karina has to say. Especially the part about having a lot of really sexy photos taken of yourself and posting them on your website. . . wait, she didn’t say that. We said that. So, erase that last line. Our bad.

Shaun White Has Some Fast Company

by The Editors on January 16, 2009

Feature-56-Shaun-White1

The cover story of the latest issue of Fast Company Magazine exposes Shaun White’s amazing sponsorship aptitude: his ability to take money from the right people and keep his personal brand rolling strong.

I was so fortunate to have had some success before the Olympics,” he says. “So when the time came for everyone to come at me, I was able to step back and say, ‘Do I really want to do that? Do I want to be known for airing over some dude who is going aaaahhh! with his teeth gleaming?’ ” . . . White has sought out companies he truly connects with. Working with a tight team of advisers that include his 29-year-old brother, Jesse, and his agent, Mark Ervin of IMG, White sees these deals as a long-term investment portfolio, something that will outlast his knees. Each corporation meshes with a discrete slice of his actual life, and with each one, White dives in and takes a central role, from the design of specific products to pulling deals together among his various partners.

Shaun has been playing it smart from the beginning and it looks like the long game pays off. And we had to laugh out loud when writer Mark Borden described Shaun as having a “strange equine beauty,” because we’ve always thought of his beauty as more simian.

FIS World Snowboard Championships 2009

by The Editors on January 16, 2009

759968277 Cdb4765C Meeting

The whole FIS World Tour and World Championship is like some strange alternate universe that we really don’t understand, nor are interested in understanding, but we’re still a little shocked when we see this: the above photo is (swear to God) a photo of the “The Executive Board Meeting of 2009 FIS Snowboard World Championships.”

That’s a swinging group of shreds if ever we’ve seen one. And it’s no wonder that we have a hard time believe it is really going on right now.
