Benny Gold In The Chronicle

by The Editors on April 14, 2008

Lv Skateboard23 054

While we don’t really understand it, Benjamin “Benny Gold” Weiner, is building a design empire on his designs for Nike, Adidas, Stussy and Levis. Here he is profiled in the San Francisco Chronicle.

[It’s] about not losing sight of your youth,” Gold says about the derivation of his nickname. “It’s important for me to remain youthful as I grow. The reference to gold symbolizes success and achievement.”
Gold’s big break came in 2002 when he was hired to create a logo for Huf, a string of streetwear boutiques opened by professional skateboarder Keith “Huf” Hufnagel. Shortly thereafter, he became the lead designer for Huf, creating urban-inspired sneakers and clothing in limited-editions that quickly became coveted items.

Vert Back In At X Games: Oh Yippie

by The Editors on April 10, 2008

The X Games are so totally irrelevant to us that even following this recent vert debacle is getting boring. Apparently, X Games General Manager Chris Stiepock is now saying that vert is back in the TV show, but it isn’t because anyone complained, or because skaters threatened to boycott the mondo, super kicker, or because readers voted to keep vert. No, no, no. It’s because of the planning process.

“We were trying to put enough vert features in the park course to satisfy the vert skateboarders,” said X Games General Manager Chris Stiepock. “In the process, the skaters realized there was no way we were going to be able to do that.”

Okay, Chris. Fine.

Western Oz Shark Scare

by The Editors on April 9, 2008

Surfer-Shark T350According to the Sunshine Coast Daily:

A Sunshine Coast surfer has been pulled out of a competition in WA after a massive shark was sighted by a fellow competitor – a day after a 16-year-old boy was killed by a shark.

Maroochydore’s Mitch Coleborn was midway through the heat at the Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River in Western Australia when the drama unfolded.

Coleborn was leading the heat comfortably when the surfers were called in with nine minutes remaining.

“I’d just completed a wave when I heard the commentators call us all in so I knew immediately it was a shark sighting – I paddled as fast as I could and it definitely rattled me when they called us in…. “

More wacky taste from the crew at Robust Flavor:

Robust Flavor is pleased to feature the new collaboration by Diamond Supply Co. and our good friends at The Skateboard Mag. Introducing the “Stop Skate Harassment” T-shirt featuring a pig, spoofing traditional police shields.

We still think the “Skateboarding Is Not A Crime” sums this up much more succinctly.

Vert Dogs Whine About X Games

by The Editors on April 9, 2008

While we all know that the X Games have been a TV show (and nothing else) since the beginning, there are a pretty big crew of skateboarders who have gotten rich by playing along with ESPN. Most notably the vert skaters. Now when ESPN announces that they are going to pull Vert Skate and BMX from the show, some (like Andy McDonald) aren’t happy about it.

Macdonald accused the X Games of seeking the sensational, as when Encinitas’ Jake Brown tumbled 46 feet to the plywood deck last year, landing on his tailbone during the Big Air competition. Brown underwent surgery on his wrist, and suffered a bruised lung and cracked vertebrae.

“It’s just a show now. A circus,” Macdonald said. “How are we going to try to one-up Jake Brown falling from the ceiling at the Staples Center?”

There’s more, but it’s mostly about people being upset that someone moved their cheese.

Surprise: Bleiler Wins Her Own Contest

by The Editors on April 9, 2008

Looks like Travis Rice isn’t the only Oakley sponsored snowboarder who can win his own self-designed contest. Gretchen Bleiler just won an even that she created originally called The Gretchen Bleiler Invitational. They later changed the name to the CoverGirl Snow Angels Invitational, but that didn’t stop Ms. Bleiler.

Even after changing its name to the CoverGirl Snow Angels Invitational, it was all about Bleiler at the inaugural event last weekend. The Aspen hostess took home the mostest at the women-only season-ending snowboard weekend she created, claiming $10,000 for her dominance in the superpipe and being named the event’s MPR (most progressive rider).

In the video Gretchen says she “just wanted it to be an event that the girls would talk about and love and enjoy coming to,” but it’s kind of like going to a birthday party and watching the hostess eat all the cake. . . and ice cream.

Just wait until we host the Boardistan Blowout. . . we’re going to scoop up those medals like spilled Cheerios.

Shark Kills Bodyboarder at Ballina NSW

by The Editors on April 8, 2008

From the Daily Telegraph:

A BODYBOARDER could get a bravery award after desperately trying to save his mate’s life when a boy was mauled to death by a shark on the NSW North Coast today.

The 16-year-olds were surfing at Lighthouse Beach, near the mouth of the Richmond River, at Ballina, when the victim Peter Edmonds was grabbed by the left leg.
The boy’s friend Brock Curtis-Mathew told paramedics he heard his mate Edmonds cry for help and immediately paddled over to help.

With no sign of the shark and blood pooling around them, the young bodyboarder then bravely paddled his Edmonds 75m to shore.

During the ordeal Edmonds passed out, forcing Curtis-Mathew to take his weight and drag him through the shallows on to the shore.

The youngster then used Edmond’s mobile phone to call for help.

However, by the time paramedics and a lifesaver arrived the boy had bled to death.
