More Officer Salvatore Rivieri Footage

by The Editors on February 19, 2008

More-Baltimore

It appears that roughing up skateboarders isn’t Baltimore Police officer Salvatore Rivieri’s only pleasure. An artist from Washington DC who was video taping people’s reactions to a moving box (on top of a remote control car) caused the same officer to lose his shit. When the artist heard the story about the skateboarder, he knew it was the same officer and he shared his video footage with ABC 2.

Bikini Girl Beats Surfer Girl In Prize Money

by The Editors on February 18, 2008

Sportingsexism 180At the recent Billabong-Pro Open women’s event in Whagamata, New Zealand, Mishca Davis, the winner of the event, was supposed to take home a $750 prize. But she wasn’t so happy about that when she found out that the top prize at the Von Zipper Bikini Contest held later that night was $1,000.

“I was expecting to win about a grand,” Davis said. “The heat sheet said $750. During the contest they started announcing the bikini contest that was going to be on and then they said the first place winner was going to get a grand and it was like what?”

”At first it was a bit funny, and then I was a little bit angry, because a thousand dollars is a lot of money,” Thomas said. “Theres a big difference between 1st place in a women’s surfing competition and a bikini contest. It just doesn’t seem to add up.”

When New Zealand’s TV3 tried to contact Billabong corporate communications office in Australia, Billabong would not respond, instead they provided the station with information about the amount of money Billabong contributes to surfing sponsorship.

Nice, spin, Billabong. Be sure to watch the video. Amazingly funny, stuff.

Skaters Smack Robbery Suspect

by The Editors on February 18, 2008

When a man tried to rob a Daytona Beach, Florida convenience store he got a skateboard beating thanks to store clerk Frank Howard and three of his friends.

Investigators said a suspicious man walked into the store and stood near the entrance for several minutes. Store clerk Frank Howard said the man then approached the register and reached across the counter to grab the money.

Howard said he fought back, and he and three friends hit the man with a skateboard and took him outside. Other customers also assisted.

Nice to see a skateboard being used as a weapon for good every once in a while.

by The Editors on February 17, 2008

We love snowboard parks, but the truth is they are dangerous. Period. Here is a prime example from the New Jersey Herald.

A North Brunswick man was in critical condition Sunday night after being involved in a snowboarding accident at Mountain Creek Resort on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Erkan Kose, 25, was snowboarding at Mountain Creek South when, according to police, he overshot a snowboarding jump, landing on the left side of his head and shoulder. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident and was unconscious and non-responsive at the scene, police said.

Huffman Goes No-Boarding For NY Times

by The Editors on February 17, 2008

15Noboard600.1

Jessie Huffman has been writing up a storm lately for the New York Times. His latest was a bindingless trip with the Noboarding crew.

THREE miles into the Kootenay Range backcountry by snowmobile, I stood alongside 50 other riders, gathered at the bottom of a wide and untracked sub-alpine run. The mid-January snowpack was so deep in the Interior Mountains of British Columbia that the effects of logging were buried beneath 180 inches of powder — the downed trees, stumps and rocks all transformed by the bounty of snow into a snowboarder’s paradise.

The conditions were extraordinary, and the crowd included Travis Rice, a professional snowboarder and multiple gold medalist in the X Games. But on this overcast Saturday, the draw was the third annual Greg Todds Memorial No-Board Race, and the challenge was simply to get down the hill — without bindings.

If John Cardiel can’t do it, then nobody can.

A Quiet Valentines For The Hawks

by The Editors on February 17, 2008

If you were the most recognizable skateboarder in the world where would you have Valentines Day dinner? A quiet, out-of-the-way restaurant? Nope. Maybe a romantic dinner at home? Wrong again. If you’re Tony Hawk you’d choose to have dinner at the most paparazzi stalked steak house in all of LA: STK. You know, because that’s where all the stars are having dinner.
